The 2026 Toyota RAV4 is an all-new, sixth-generation small SUV — and for the first time, every RAV4 is a hybrid. Toyota retired the gas-only engine for this generation: you now choose between a standard hybrid rated as high as 43 MPG combined and a plug-in hybrid good for up to 54 miles of all-electric driving. Pricing starts at $31,900, and this generation debuts the first-ever RAV4 GR SPORT.

What's New for 2026

This is a complete redesign — the sixth generation of America's best-selling small SUV. The "hammerhead" front end, three distinct design styles and a stiffer TNGA-K platform structure all arrive together. Toyota organizes the seven grades into three style paths: Core (LE, XLE Premium, Limited) for everyday practicality, Rugged (Woodland, offered in hybrid or plug-in form with standard AWD and all-terrain tires) and Sport (SE, XSE), topped by the first-ever GR SPORT, which pairs GR-tuned suspension and steering with standard plug-in hybrid power. Inside, there's a new digital gauge cluster, the latest generation of Toyota Audio Multimedia and Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 across the lineup.

Powertrain and Fuel Economy

Here is what the EPA officially rates for the 2026 RAV4:

| RAV4 version | City | Highway | Combined | |---|---|---|---| | Hybrid FWD | 47 | 40 | 43 MPG | | Hybrid AWD (SE, LE) | 46 | 39 | 42 MPG | | Hybrid AWD (XLE) | 45 | 38 | 41 MPG | | Hybrid AWD (Limited, XSE) | 43 | 37 | 41 MPG | | Woodland AWD | 41 | 35 | 38 MPG |

The plug-in hybrid isn't in the EPA's 2026 database yet; Toyota lists an EPA-estimated 54-mile electric range and a manufacturer-estimated 40 MPG combined for it. Expect that rating to firm up as EPA testing completes.

Interior, Tech and Cargo

RAV4 carries up to 37.8 cubic feet of cargo behind the second row. Available features include a power tilt/slide panoramic glass roof, 8-way power-adjustable SofTex-trimmed front seats and a 12.9-inch touchscreen on the new multimedia generation. Every RAV4 comes with eight airbags standard, including a front passenger seat-cushion airbag plus front and rear side curtains.

Safety

Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 is standard on every 2026 RAV4: pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control, lane departure alert with steering assist, lane tracing assist, road sign assist, proactive driving assist and auto high beams. A blind spot monitor with rear cross traffic alert is standard on the plug-in hybrid.

Questions People Ask About the 2026 RAV4

Is there a gas-only 2026 RAV4? No. The sixth generation is exclusively hybrid or plug-in hybrid — the non-hybrid engine is gone.

What MPG does the 2026 RAV4 get? The EPA rates the front-wheel-drive hybrid at 47 city, 40 highway, 43 combined MPG. All-wheel-drive versions run 42 down to 38 combined depending on grade.

How much is a 2026 RAV4? It starts at $31,900 for the LE hybrid.

RAV4 vs. CR-V Hybrid — which wins? The RAV4 AWD hybrid makes 236 hp against the CR-V's 204 hp and beats it in combined fuel economy (43 vs. 40 MPG). The CR-V counters with more maximum cargo space — 76.5 vs. 70.4 cubic feet.

The story is simple: Toyota took its best seller, electrified every one and priced the entry just above $30,000. If you've waited for a RAV4 that plugs in, the 54-mile PHEV finally makes the daily commute all-electric. If you just want the best mileage without plugging in, the 43-MPG front-wheel-drive hybrid is the one to test drive first.

The Bottom Line

Buy the 2026 RAV4 hybrid if fuel economy, resale strength and Toyota's reliability top your list — the 43-MPG front-wheel-drive hybrid is the no-compromise commuter. Step up to the plug-in hybrid if you can charge at home and want most of your week on electricity alone. Skip it if you insist on a traditional gas-only powertrain: that option no longer exists in this generation.
