Questions to Ask a Car Dealer
The questions that separate prepared buyers from easy marks — covering price, fees, financing, warranty, and trade-in.
Price and inventory
- What is the out-the-door price in writing, including every fee and add-on?
- How long has this exact vehicle been on your lot?
- Are there factory rebates, loyalty, military or recent-graduate incentives I qualify for?
- Has anything been added at the dealership after it arrived from the factory?
Fees and add-ons
- What is your documentation fee, and is it capped by state law?
- Which add-ons are already installed, and will you remove them or waive the charge?
- Is VIN etching, nitrogen, paint protection or fabric protection optional?
Financing
- What is the buy rate from the lender versus the rate you are quoting me?
- Is there a prepayment penalty on this loan?
- Can I see the payment with and without GAP and the extended service contract?
Trade-in and warranty
- What is my trade worth as a standalone cash offer, separate from the new car price?
- What exactly does the factory warranty cover, and what is the powertrain term?
- For used vehicles: can I see the inspection report and take it to my own mechanic?
Ask these one at a time and write the answers down. A dealer who answers all of them plainly is one you can work with.
